Hillsboro's History
Through the years.....
Hillsboro Elementary School was built in 1958 and consisted of 10 classrooms for grades 1-8, a cafeteria, a gymnasium/auditorium, and administrative offices. In 1963 the school was changed to grades 1-6. Kindergarten rooms and another classroom were added in 1973 with an entire new wing being built in 1981 to provide a library and 5 more classrooms. Still the population increased. A portable classroom was added in 1987. Additional portable classrooms were needed until the total reached five by 1992.
The sixth grade was moved to the Coffee County Middle School in 1995. A Family Resource Center was established in our school the same year, adding preschool classes for at-risk children. In 1996 a new wing with 9 additional classrooms, student restrooms, a cafeteria and kitchen, and a teacher workroom was opened.
Remodeling of the old cafeteria area was completed in 1997 to house administrative offices, a Kindergarten classroom, a volunteer workroom, and a Writing to Read Lab.
In 1998 the school qualified as school-wide Title I. This allowed the creation of a Computer Lab accessible to every student in the school with regularly scheduled classes.
At The Present.....
Hillsboro Elementary School serves students from preschool through the fifth grade, with a present enrollment of approximately 390. We house twenty-three regular classrooms, as well as various special area classes. We are a school that encourages academic excellence, parental involvement, and community support.
Hillsboro Elementary has received the 21st Century Schools Award since 1994 from the Tennessee Department of Education. The award indicates that our school has received exemplary status for meeting the goals in academic achievement, attendance, and promotion. In 1997 we were the first elementary school in the Coffee County school system to receive accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. We look forward to continuing to serve our students and community with the same high standards that have governed our school through the years.
In 2010, CCBOE completed the remodeling and addition of HES. The remodeling project on the original wing of the school was complete in July 2009. The old windows in this section of the building were replaced and fire doors were installed in the original building. All tile and carpet were removed and replaced with new tile. The gym was retro-fitted with a wheel chair lift to make the stage accessible for the handicapped. 2 Kindergarten rooms were remodeled and rewired for a new sound proof music room and a new up-to-date computer lab. Most, if not all, of the asbestos was removed as well. A new roof was also installed on the original building at this time. Finally they added an addition to the cafeteria. During Christmas break 2009, the gym was also remodeled. This included stripping and refinishing of the entire floor, paint on all the walls, new murals, and new stage curtains.
During Thanksgiving break 2009, the new Kindergarten and Preschool addition was completed. This addition added 10 classrooms, a new library, and an activity room. After this addition and remodeling project, Hillsboro should be able to house 700 students.
